Perceptual Positions

Perceptual Positions sit at the heart of how we experience the world and relate to other people. They are a structured way of shifting perspective, changing how we see, hear, and feel an event. In doing so, they offer a powerful route to emotional balance, clearer thinking, and better communication.

In simple terms, Perceptual Positions are like the “persons” of grammar:

  • First position – I / Me
  • Second position – You / The Other
  • Third position – He/She/They / Observer
  • Fourth position – We / The System
  • Fifth position – Beyond / The Transcendent View

Understanding and using these positions gives us a toolbox for working with difficult situations, old hurts, and current challenges.
