Why Perceptual Positions Matter

When a situation feels “stuck” or emotionally charged, it is often because our perspectives are misaligned. Our thoughts, feelings, and images do not all belong to the same point of view at the same time.

For example, we may:

  • See ourselves from the outside (as if on a screen)
  • Feel emotions that seem to come from someone else,
  • Hear an internal voice that sounds like another person’s criticism,

and yet believe we are “being ourselves” in the first position.

This misalignment can create confusion, anxiety, conflict, and a sense of being overwhelmed. Once the positions are clarified and aligned, the “swamp” of confusion is drained. What remains is a clearer view of what is really happening and what actually needs attention.

Aligned Perceptual Positions give us:

  • A stable sense of self
  • Cleaner boundaries between “me” and “you”
  • The ability to step back from emotion without shutting down
  • Access to empathy, wisdom, and even a sense of peace
